My Process

Cooper: Commissioned ArtWork | STEP 1

First coat starts with using three colors of the background. I soften these while using them in the subject’s coloring as well. Dark colors then add medium to light after that all using strokes in the fur direction.

STEP 2

Coat two is doing the background a second time and softening. All fur is blended and softened to look like he’s been brushed.

STEP 3

Third coat is using all colors from the darker tones to lighter on fur and softening all of it to get the dimension of the fur. First coat on his scarf.

STEP 4

Fourth coat of paint is using strokes of paint to get single strands and bunches of fur to layer over last two coats. Now the nose and eyes have first coat of paint. Second layer on scarf and deepening shadows of scarf.

STEP 5

Fifth coat is softening where the hair is closer to his scalp and adding more touches of white including his eyes and nose. The third layer of paint is now applied to the scarf and softened at the bottom for a nice blending look. The white twinkle in his eye is the last touch and enhances which way the light is coming from and the direction he’s looking. Cooper is all done and ready to go home. This was a total 3 week process.
